The DISC Test
My result in the D Test was the ‘D-I’ combination, with D being the dominant. The test accurately described my personality, and not only that, but afterwards I described the four DISC “personalities” to my family and a couple of my friends and they all predicted that I would be a ‘D’. So, the test accurately identified who I am and how others see me. During the exercise I read ahead the description of the results, and made the same prediction. The ‘Surprise Factor’ came in when I noticed the negative traits that were associated with a D type, too impulsive, aggressive, always leaning towards a domineering position. It was a surprise because the test said I liked certain characteristics which I was sure I had, diplomacy, consistent, analytical and because I realized that ‘dominant’ is actually not such a good thing.
I then tried to evaluate the class exercises and tried to determine what kind of traits I demonstrated during my participation. And the test was accurate again. I think the test was very helpful, for me it pointed out that while I wish I had only positive traits, these actually come in a package with less desirable ones. More importantly, the test was able to portray my strengths and weaknesses, and it got me thinking about how I could best make use of them in any situation.
Also, the test successfully proved to me another important aspect, one that I usually tend to overlook, and that is never to judge somebody on a first impression and based on the type of traits that are important to me. I realized that every type in the DISC test was just a desirable, and each showed a balance between positives and negatives. I don’t believe that someone could change their type, because our personalities are shaped through life experiences and influenced by genetic factors. We might wish to be a “C-S” but it is impossible to self-transform us into that. However, the test showed that you can learn to better understand yourself and to improve the way you interact with other people.
